Problem Definition:

When installing or upgrading Microsoft Office 2016 on a system where a prior version of Microsoft Office was installed, the installation fails with "Microsoft Office 2016 encountered an error during setup."  The installation rolls back.

Cause:

The cause is related to the Microsoft Help folder being left behind by the removal of the prior version of Office.

Resolution:

Locate the following folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft Help.  Rename "Microsoft Help" to "Microsoft Help.old"  Restart the computer and reattempt the installation of Microsoft Office.

 

Additional Information:

ProgramData is a Hidden Folder, you will need to Show Hidden Files and Folders in order to identify the "Microsoft Help" folder.
